Beautiful Future
« on: October 29, 2009, 04:25:20 AM »
Hello, everyone, new here :)
I really like Primal Scream. Though I haven't listened to all 9 studio albums, Sonic Flower Groove (1987) is a great example of 80s college radio music, citing influence of R.E.M., current British guitar music, and Syd Barrett (Gillespie had tons of tapes by him), Screamadelica (1991) has to be one of the best albums of the 90s, I remember liking Vanishing Point (1997, though I do not remember the album itself  ), Riot City Blues (2006) was a real fine Americana, and Beautiful Future (2008) has to be my best loved album by them.

Now, as for the main question.
Last year, I dwnldd the Beautiful Future album, and all the tracks only contained their signature riffs and repetitions of first verses. I did love that, anyway, it seemed cool, let alone I loved the music myself. When I later heard Can't Go Back in a live performance and in a music video, both on YouTube, and they were different, with more riffs and lyrics, I thought they just did a different version for the single release, and thought that was cool.
But now I've heard some more songs, and they all were different as well. So I dwnldd the album again, and found out that all the songs are different from what I had originally heard.
So I wonder, what was that material I had heard first? Rough mixes?

it was just promo clips of the album. BF and RCB are definately the weaker albums by the scream.

Did note there is no mention of EXTERMINATOR in your post. Download, buy, beg or steal it now, it is the best Primal Scream ever made and is pretty much ten years old to this day, proper futuremusic :smitten:

If BF and RCB are their weakest, and I love those absolutely, then the ones I have not heard MUST be as high as space  :2funny:

Agree with meds,

Beautiful future was grand when I heard it first, but it lacks real punch and too many of the tunes sound the same/called the same name. Riot city blues is an average LP by Scream's standards....

What I'd do if i was you - Buy the postparty trilogy - Vanishing Point, Exterminator & Evil Heat. These 3 ablums are the true scream, the sounds we nut-ball fans wanna here.

Jesus mate, I'm envious that you've not heard EXTRMTR yet.

Well, I can't say I'm a long time fan, so... that's why, mates ;)
Also, I'm not much of a follower when it comes to masses saying "Oh THAT's the best album"... For example, The Dark Side Of The Moon is FAR not my most fav album by Pink Floyd, - I rather prefer their psychedelic era :)

Still think Uptown and Suicide Bomb are better than anything on Evil Heat or RCB.

Hey, I'm glad to hear someone sticking up for Riot City Blues. I enjoy that album so fucking much, though XTRMNTR is the best, by far. Best album of the last 15 years.

Uptown's great, but there's no way that Suicide Bomb is better than about half of Evil Heat. On an unrelated topic, Country Girl came on when I was out last night and it was absolutely amazing, in a kind of stupid way. I love it.

i dont think any song off BF comes even close to anything of XTRMNTR or Evil Heat, i really quite liked BF when it came out but listening back it lacks direction, just a collection of primal scream songs but without any style, was quite a fan of uptown but i thought it really bombed when they played it live, both in southampton and brixton, would also agree that country girl is still a great dumb ass rocknroll tune, one to go with rocks / jailbird on good boozy nite out  :cheesy:

Way-hay....a debate!

Yeah, Beautiful Future promised so much, the band seemed to be buzzing at the release of their new Lp but it shot it's load too early and feel asleep on itself. When you hear some of the noises the Arctic Monkeys got out of Josh Homme, maybe the lads should have hung out with him a bit more. Someone mentioned direction earlier on this thred - having the QOSA hitman and the "Young Folks" dude on the same record? Crisps and chocolate should never go together. "The glory of love.../i love to be hurt" - what the fuck is all that about?

Personally I'd like to see the next Lp being a bit more loose and weird. A long album with tracks layered into each other at times, maybe another vocalist on the album, have a sigur ros sound on some of it...Or do a soul album with Sly Stone (the poor bastard's broke i read somewhere recently).

Form is temporary, class is permanent, it wont be long im sure till we're all back under the spell.

I think alot of the songs on Riot City Blues are daft, mad and don't really mean anything. That's what makes it such a fun record, along with hazier songs like When The Bomb Drops and Little Death. I like listening to most Scream albums from 1-10 or -11, but Riot City Blues and Screamdelica are my favourites to go through the whole way.

Sounds like you downloaded a looped version, maybe?
