Weatherall & Grinderman sounds like a winner!!

I saw Weatherall at the Moon Duo gig in London last night along with Richard Fearless and other cohorts. Blinding gig I must say. Supported by The Oscillation (DC Recordings, home of Higamos Hogamos). The gig venue had a smoking area outside behind it and to get out onto the street (to grab more fags) you couldn't go out the entrance area so had to go through a door that for some reason lead you into the back of the Columbian cafe next door (a very Mr Benn experience). The only people sat in there around a table having a drink whilst Latin music played were Weatherall and his posse. Very bizarre moment. The venues were a series of units under a railway bridge area in Elephant & Castle.

Nick Cave also seems to be taking charge of a reboot of 'The Crow':

Picked up Uncut - cd is very good. There's a Top 30 list of Nick Cave songs with various people giving their opinion, inc the band, Bobby G talks about a track which I can't recall the name of from the Bad Seeds/Mutiny EP, nice set of pics in there. Plus a Grinderman interview too. It's all good.

UNCUT CAVE CD is as good a compilation as will be released this year! Nothing new to these ears but every song a stone-dead classic ... wonderful stuff!  Whole issue is perfect for a CAVE anal obsessive like me!!!

Personal highlights include: HANK WILLIAMS – ALONE & FORSAKEN and ELVIS PRESLEY – TOMORROW NIGHT.

ALONE & FORSAKEN: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUmZi6qZY5c
TOMORROW NIGHT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ra8opRBBoU

GILLESPIE’s choice of CAVE song is JENNIFER’S VEIL from THE BIRTHDAY PARTY’s ‘83’s MUTINY EP ... great choice but really surprised that the EP title track - MUTINY IN HEAVEN – didn’t merit a mention in the thirty listed tracks.

I've been reading this Uncut on my commute with the Bad Seeds best of on my ipod, nice to listen then read about the song. My collection isn't exactly bursting at the seems with Bad Seeds material and I was thinking about getting one of the first four albums to bulk it out. I love Tupelo off the best of and, well it's all great isn't it, but I could listen to that track over and over. So, Bukowski, what should I grab? My eye has been on Your Funeral My Trial or Kicking Against The Pricks. The first record I got by them was The Good Son, on vinyl with the free 7". Quite rare these days apparently.

Had a play of the Mutiny EP on the way home last night to check out Bobs choice and like you I was surprised nothing else from that release was featured in the 30 songs.

I love the gospel tracks on that free cd, really good mix of stuff on there. Go pop one off the front in your local newsagents pronto!

I often judge a person by the depth of their BIRTHDAY PARTY / NICK CAVE / BAD SEEDS collection ...  knuppel2
So, a great chance to get back into my good books, JohhnyBhoy!!!

Well, where to start?

If you're looking at any of the first seven albums (in no order: TENDER PREY, GOOD SON, HENRY'S DREAM, FROM HER TO ETERNITY, YOUR FUNERAL ... MY TRIAL, KICKING AGAINST THE PRICKS & FIRST BORN IS DEAD) make sure you get the 2009 / 2010 DIGITAL REMASTERED versions.

MICK HARVEY (in particular) spent a whole load of time reworking the souns of these reissues (even after he left THE BAD SEEDS). Results are excellent!

And each CD comes with a second disk of extras / rarities / DVDs ...

OK, so where to start? My opinion might change by the day, but today I'd plump for the following three:

1. YOUR FUNERAL ... MY TRIAL: if only for the greatest BAD SEEDS song, SAD WATERS (originally written by CAVE for JOHNNY CASH, fact-fans; but kept back 'cos it was too good!). The TIME ROSE cover LONG TIME MAN is awesome, too! But check out the original:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw6lkAfBHuM&feature=related and whilst i'm at it, here's another TIM ROSE classic, MORNING DEW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn4KfJS1nZQ&feature=related

2. FROM HER TO ETERNITY: first BAD SEEDS lp and probably my favourite. Very stark, very striking ... wonderful stuff. Another wonderful cover version - this time LEONARD COHEN's AVALANCHE:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-oLmOm9vk0

3. FIRSTBORN IS DEAD: second BAD SEEDS lp and the one which includes TUPELO and WANTED MAN, a DYLAN song probably made famous by JOHNNY CASH:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K33HMV8vkic

Ah, feck it! You'll need 'em all in due course! For me, CAVE is an absolute genius ... my greatest musical love ...

You cannae go wrong!!! Let me know what you decide to do!!!

Always good to see those green coloured words come up, cheers Bukowski.

I am quite lame on the Nick Cave front I must admit. The only originals I have are the Best Of, The Good Son and Dig Lazarus Dig! and the Grinderman album too. Not a plump collection is it  embarassed  But stored away in my ipod world are the Mutiny/Bad Seed EP, Big Jesus Trash Can, Boatmans Call, Abbatoir Blues, No More Shall We Part and the White Lunar soundtrack collection.

My song of the week is Mutiny In Heaven. What a song and an incredible churning bassline!! Absolutely love that one so have ordered the cd of that 2 EP collection today. I was going to get the vinyl off of Discogs but thought paying £24 for the 2 instead of £6.99 for the cd was a bit daft. Junkyard will be next for me. It shames me to think I don't these already especially when I think about my love for all things trashy rock n roll (Pussy Galore springing to mind on the clattering scum bucket blues front). I've been playing Dig Lazarus Dig a few times recently as well.

Will opt for either Your Funeral My Trial or From Her To Eternity as my next Bad Seeds purchase. I was reading the reviews of the re-issues earlier on Pitchfork and another couple of sites and YFMT and Kicking Against The Pricks came out on top but I like the idea of getting FHTE too. My mind was set on getting the original cd's as they're priced around a fiver but if the re-issues are that much better on the sound front then I'll reconsider.

Cheers amigo  afro

UPDATE:: popped into HMV at lunchtime for a browse and picked up the remastered From Her To Eternity for the bargain price of £5. They'd put the wrong sticker on one of the copies as all the others were about £18!! Haha, suckers. Love the portrait shots inside the cover. Cheekbone City.
